The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!

The story so far: In Nov '02, we were accepted into a domestic infant adoption program. In Jan '03, we decided to switch to their Russia international adoption program. In Feb, we realized this wasn't the right program for us. We found a new homestudy agency, and a new adoption agency, Children's Hope International (CHI). In June, we switched homestudy agencies to Community Adoption Center (CAC). All of our paperwork was finished in August and in Sept our dossier was sent to Russia and on to the Tomsk region. We hope to get a referral sometime this winter and bring our daughter home before May. We hope to adopt a girl under 36 months. Below are daily updates, links, thoughts and tips I want to remember later.

On Wednesday, we headed to Milwaukee to get fingerprinted for the I600 application (INS, now BCIS, approval to bring the children into the country). We left about 5:45am.

My friend Jane gave us some tips about the area--there was construction going on! It was a little confusing because we couldn't tell where the highway dumped us out, but we figured it out pretty quickly (thank goodness for MapQuest maps!). She also suggested street parking so I brought along lots of quarters! We easily found metered parking a half block from the building.

We got there with 30 minutes to wait for the building to open, and were about 10th in line. It was a chilly morning, and we both really needed a bathroom break after the drive (about 1.5 hours). Only a couple other people were there for fingerprinting, so we ended up 2 and 3 in that line. The letter warned that you could be in a long line, so we were nervous about how boring the morning would be. The only problem ended up being all the hours driving with such a short break!

Oh, and the fingerprinting itself--we expected to get all inked up. Eric even promised to put a fingerprint on my cheek to wear to work. It was all digital! We were disappointed ::giggles:: But it was certainly nice to have it clean and neat. We had to put Cornhusker's lotion on first then they took us to a machine with a couple glass plates. First, the 4 fingers were done all at once on the larger plate. Then each digit was done separately on the smaller one. We were out of there less than an hour after we arrived!

Kaliningrad Exclave - Geography
Here's a much better map of Kaliningrad. History of the city of Kaliningrad is very interesting (and not long). (Kaliningrad is both a city and a region.)

According to Encarta, I've been pronouncing it wrong. It should be klynyin-grat. (i've been saying kah lin en grad.)

Kaliningrad page with lots of links. Of particular note are three pages of photos from a 1998 trip and a page of siteseeing info (from 2001).

Children's Hope's Russia site now has a Kaliningrad info page. And hey! the hotel takes credit cards!

Some really cool info about Kaliningrad. Includes a map, although it's difficult to read. Most importantly (so far, I've only read the first bit): Kalinigrad is this tiny part of Russia that isn't connected to the rest of the mainland. It's on the Baltic Sea, bordering Lithuania and Poland. I'd wondered about that little part on some other maps that highlighted Russia and included this "extra" bit off there. Pretty cool. Can't wait to read the rest of the history. Not where I expected it to be!

Just remembered something else: CHI opened a new region, Kaliningrad, which borders Lithuania! We just might request that region now.

Not much has happened for the last month, that's why I haven't posted anything. My passport came back, fixed. We didn't make the fingerprinting appointment because Jedi was sick. Will have to go on a Wed soon. No one has gotten all of our paperwork so everything is just stalled for now. I hate the waiting!!!
